What is a neuropsychologist?
A neuropsychologist is a licensed psychologist with expertise in understanding the relationship between brain and behavior. Neuropsychologists have specialized training in brain-related conditions through coursework, clinical rotations, internships, and postdoctoral experience. Neuropsychologists are often sought out for their specialties with diagnostic assessment and clarification, and frequently consult with other medical professionals in the management of neurological, neurodevelopmental and psychological conditions.
What is a neuropsychological evaluation?
A neuropsychological evaluation is an extensive assessment that examines cognitive performance across various domains. The primary goal is to understand the relationship between the brain and behavior and to pinpoint any specific areas of difficulties. This type of evaluation comprises a battery of standardized tests that are carefully selected to evaluate intellectual functioning, academic skills, language processing, visual-spatial abilities, memory, attention, executive functions, and emotional and social competence.
What is the difference between a neuropsychological evaluation and psychological evaluation?
A psychological evaluation focuses on understanding an individual’s emotional and psychological state. This type of evaluation is often utilized to diagnose and guide treatment for mental health disorders. While there is some overlap, psychological evaluations are usually less focused on cognitive performance and more on emotional well-being, personality, and interpersonal dynamics.
What to expect during an evaluation at NCS?
A neuropsychological evaluation at NCS follows a holistic and flexible protocol that ensures a thorough and individualized assessment process. All evaluations include a clinical interview, in-person testing, a feedback session, and a final report. An evaluation may also involve thorough record review, a school observation, and attendance in school meetings. The following provides a brief overview of each step.
Clinical Interview
A clinical interview will take place with Dr. Matevosyan and the patient (or parent/guardian) that includes but is not limited to a discussion about concerns and reason for referral, a detailed developmental history, and additional steps that may be required as part of the evaluation (e.g., school observation, collateral contacts, etc.).
In-Person Assessment
The evaluation itself may vary between 6 to 12 hours of direct neuropsychological assessment, contingent upon each case’s specificity. This process involves the administration of standardized tests chosen to assess each patient’s unique profile, spanning domains such as intelligence (IQ), academic achievement (reading, writing, and math), learning and memory, executive functioning, emotional well-being, and social acuity.
Record Review
Dr. Matevosyan will review relevant medical, educational and past assessment reports. Key findings will be integrated into the final report to capture relevant history.
Collateral Contact with other Professionals
Upon receiving consent from the patient (or parent/guardian), collateral contact with other mental health professionals, medical doctors, or other interventionists may be warranted.
Scoring/Report Writing
Following the last testing appointment, all material will undergo accurate scoring and report processing procedures. Dr. Matevosyan will review and integrate the results and form an impression with detailed recommendations into a report prior to the feedback session.
Feedback Session
The results and final impressions of the evaluation are shared approximately 2-3 weeks following the final assessment. This meeting typically lasts 1-1.5 hours and includes a review of the findings, discussion of strengths and weaknesses, diagnostic clarification, and specific treatment recommendations based on findings. Following the feedback session and pending any revisions, a final neuropsychological report will be shared with the referring party.
What is the age range served at NCS?
Dr. Matevosyan specializes in the assessment of children 6 years and older. There are no age parameters with the adult population.
How can I prepare for my first day of assessment?
A well-balanced breakfast and quality sleep are the only preparations suggested. Please be sure to wear comfortable clothing and bring any medical devices (e.g., glasses, hearing aids). The use of medication during testing can be discussed with Dr. Matevosyan during the intake process.
Do you accept insurance?
At the moment, we do not accept any form of insurance. However, patients can request for a “superbill” which they can submit to their insurance company for partial reimbursement.
What is the cost for an evaluation?
The cost for each type of evaluation will depend on the referral question and type of evaluation requested. Fee structure will be discussed prior to the clinical interview during a free case consultation
